Potter Park Zoo in Lansing, MI is one of a small percentage of zoos in America accredited by the AZA (Association of Zoos and Aquariums).
The AZA holds stricter standards regarding animal wellbeing, park safety, etc. then our national laws. The standards are always changing, usually improving, and zoos must go through the accreditation process every five years. Potter Park Zoo has been accredited for 20 years.
Many of the zoo's exhibits are part of species conservation efforts, and they just announced that they believe their female black rhino (a critically endangered species) is pregnant.
On April 2, 2019 Potter Park Zoo also announced that they are the first AZA accredited zoo in Michigan to become a Certified Sensory Inclusive Zoo. Guests can check out sensory bags, free of charge, that contain noise canceling headphones, fidget tools, verbal cue cards, sunglasses, and weighted lap pads.
